Derek Garten is a music producer, mixer and co-owner of Prime Recording in Nashville, TN. A native of Washington, D.C. and graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, Derek has spent over twenty years in the music industry and is well known for his strong vision and attention to detail. He also makes a decent cup of coffee.

After getting his start at Emerald Sound Studios and Masterfonics studio on Music Row, Derek refined his skills with engineers Chuck Ainlay (Vince Gill), Dann Huff (Faith Hill) and Jeff Balding (Megadeath), among others.

Over the last few years, Derek has recorded and mixed tracks for artists like Taylor Swift, Thomas Rhett, and Jewel in addition to well-known indie bands like Uncle Skeleton and a musical side project for Brittany Howard of the Alabama Shakes.

In 2017, Derek had the opportunity to work with Ross Wariner to record a 40-piece orchestra for the award-winning Dots franchise. In 2018, he recorded, produced and mixed Hungarian-based Ferenczi György és a Rackajam’s seventh album in four years at the studio and in March, received a Gold certification for their 2016 collaboration. Most recently, Prime Recording partnered with MGM Distribution in Nashville to record and film emerging artists including Australia’s Cub Sport and pop sludge duo Sad Baxter.

In addition to his musical interests, Derek is an inspired home chef, budding cyclist and along with his wife Amy, dedicated to the regrowth of community in their north Nashville neighborhood.
